What Is NAD+?

Like we already said, NAD+ is short for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. It is naturally produced in our body as it’s released from the neurons in our blood vessels, our bladder, intestines and certain neurons within our brain.

NAD+’s primary function is electron transport between different biochemical reactions within our cells and, in some cases, even in the extracellular space. This is what makes these reactions possible and what reflects in the mitochondria - through new cell generation, improved cellular functioning and DNA repairs. 

By allowing these processes to run properly, NAD+ keeps our metabolism in check, improves the health and longevity of our cells and, indirectly, slows down our aging process. 

Benefits Of NAD+

Though we did a high level overview of some of the most profound NAD+ benefits and effects, now we’re going to dig in a bit deeper into each one:

• Metabolism - though NAD+ is not the main driving force behind metabolism, its role is certainly not the one to disregard. It is a supporting molecule which facilitates energy transport and conversion, DNA repair, and even cell repair and creation. Unfortunately, the levels of NAD+ decline as we age, which negatively affects these functions we just mentioned.
• Enzyme activation - we already said that NAD+ is responsible for enzyme activation/deactivation, but what do we mean exactly? Well, among others, NAD+ activates Poly-ADP-ribose polymerases, an enzyme that’s involved in anti-inflammatory processes within our body as well as some DNA repair. It also safeguards our nervous system from oxidative stress, which eventually leads to an improvement in memory. So, we can go so far to say NAD+ has anti aging properties. 
• Heart and cardiovascular system - one, not often talked about NAD+ benefit is cardiovascular protection. Some animal studies have shown it helps maintain elasticity in our blood vessels (mainly arteries). As we age, arteries lose elasticity and it becomes harder for our heart to pump blood, which leads to an increased blood pressure, and the increased risk of developing a cardiovascular disease and even heart attack. But we must end this post with a word of caution. The majority of the studies we’ve gone through, were done on animal subjects. We still need to see full-blown studies on human subjects before drawing any definitive conclusions.
