What is Decapeptide-12?
Decapeptide-12 is a synthetic peptide used in skincare for its ability to reduce hyperpigmentation. It inhibits melanin production, the pigment responsible for skin color, thereby brightening the skin. It's considered safer than traditional skin-lightening ingredients like hydroquinone.
What Does Decapeptide-12 Do?
Decapeptide-12 is a competitive inhibitor of tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for melanin production, the pigment that gives skin its color. It works by reversibly binding to tyrosinase in pigment-producing cells, inhibiting its activity and reducing melanin synthesis.
This process leads to the lightening of skin tone. In fact, studies have shown that Decapeptide-12 is nearly 17 times more potent as a tyrosinase inhibitor than hydroquinone, a commonly used skin-lightening agent.
Moreover, unlike hydroquinone, Decapeptide-12 does not cause adverse effects when used for skin-lightening purposes. Its ability to restrain tyrosinase effectively helps treat conditions such as hyperpigmentation, where there is excessive melanin production, leading to patchy pigmentation.
